E2B Pulse is proud to report that the 2011 Showcase Events for the National Recycling Stars Scheme have been a runaway success with a record number of attendees.
Hosted by the National Recycling Stars scheme, the two events in Edinburgh and Northampton brought together over 120 businesses from across the UK. Seminar sessions focused on industry developments, advice on how to improve recycling rates and best practice tips. Speakers included representatives from WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme), Zero Waste Scotland and Star case studies that have showcased excellence and innovation in their approach to reducing their environmental impact.
This was followed by an awards showcase where Gold, Silver and Bronze regional winners were announced (see full list of winners below).
Edinburgh
On winning the Gold Star of the Year for Scotland, Stephen Case of The Inverleith Hotel said:
“The combination of learning from examples of best practice, combined with the legal perspective and the new technical and support solutions available was great and gave much food for thought.”

“Thank you very much for the award. I would like to thank Shanks for their support in enabling me to achieve what I think is a social and moral commitment to the planet. We can all help to recycle and conserve energy in many different ways - it just takes a little thought and effort to make a big difference.”
Robbie Weir, Programme Manager of SME Resource Efficiency at Zero Waste Scotland and guest speaker at the Edinburgh Showcase Event, also gave his thoughts:
“Many thanks to the team at Recycling Stars for such a great event in Edinburgh. It was inspiring to hear about how successful many scheme members have been in making progress towards zero waste. The combination of learning from examples of best practice, combined with the legal perspective and the new technical and support solutions available was great and gave much food for thought.”
Northampton
Andy Evans, Operation Manager at Amey Northampton Schools who achieved a Gold Award for England commented:
'We at Amey Northampton Schools PFI are very proud that our efforts to achieve ‘zero to land fill’ have been recognised with this award. We work closely with our waist service provider Shanks to accomplish this, making use of pyrolysis technology to divert from landfill.'
Congratulations
Steve Dickinson, Managing Director of E2B Group, thanked all those who entered the awards this year, commenting:
“I have been impressed with the standard of the entries received this year. More and more businesses are realising they can reduce their costs, increase profits and achieve sustainable competitive advantage through implementing projects to reduce their carbon impact.”
Commenting on the events, Paul Clements, Materials Resource and Recovery Director for events sponsor Shanks Waste Management Limited, said:
"A truly well organised and valued event supported by an excellent range of key note speakers. The attendees received informative and relevant information with respect to creation, enforcement and embracement of the legislation in a clear, concise and passionate manner. Companies have made the initial step to attend these meetings, the true success of such events will be based upon the subsequent follow up, of which, I know National Recycling Stars are fully committed and focused upon."
