Severnside Get Stuck in at the 'Great Taff Tidy'
The Taff is one of the ten major rivers in the UK, but for centuries was subjected to misuse by industry and local residents. During the coal mining era the flowing waters ran black, and with the boom in housing along its banks it became a convenient location for getting rid of household waste.
After many regeneration projects, to complete the picture and create a river that is loved and looked after, Keep Wales Tidy organised the ‘Great Taff Tidy’ in September this year to improve the aesthetic appearance of the river, from its source in the Brecon Beacons along its 52 mile stretch to Cardiff Bay.
Severnside were pleased to get stuck in and spent the day at a spot near Pontypridd clearing out lots of interesting and unusual items from the river. The team included Hina Morton, Senior Commercial Co-ordinator and Mike Morton, Commercial Co-ordinator with their daughter Manisha and Jade Bourke, Marketing Assistant along with friends and family Aoife Lawrence, Paul Tambini, Mark Tambini, Jamie Long and Kerry Maisey-Long.
Keep Wales Tidy’s Projects Director, Louise Tambini commented “Keep Wales Tidy are delighted to be working closely with Severnside Recycling. As companies who both have environmental issues at the core of our values, we are ideal partners who can support each other to improve the quality of the environment.
This mutual benefit was clearly evident during the ‘Great Taff Tidy’ in September. It was great to see Severnside staff volunteering their own time to take part. They really got stuck in, on a wet and windy day, to remove years of built-up waste. The result was a much cleaner, safer riverine environment for locals and wildlife alike. In addition to this practical support from staff, we are extremely grateful to all employees who donated their ‘dress down’ money to KWT.
This money will enable us to provide more tools and equipment to our local volunteer groups who work tirelessly to improve the quality of the Welsh environment. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the employees of Severnside for their support and look forward to even more partnership projects in the future”.
